The Trouble with Season 3 by jen--joy The Trouble with Season 3 by jen--joy
I won't get into a big emotional fuss, but I'm pretty disappointed in the latest season of MLP. I want to reserve a little bit of my judgment until I see how Season 4 goes, but Season 3 was rather weak storytelling, which I've tried to highlight here by juxtaposing the messages that SE03 episodes send compared to 1 and 2. (some of the messages are deliberate and some unintentional). Kid's show or not, the creative team and execs seemed to have treated their audiences like idiots this season.

Honestly, I think the show has jumped the shark, but I wanna see what happens in Season 4.

A lot lf these don't make sense, and seem more . You seem to think the show io I'm not gonna point out the wrongs in all of them, but anyways.

"Cloning is evil!"

Nobody in the episode outright said that, it was the trouble the clones were causing.

"You can literally face your deepest anxieties overnight!"

Well, she was given the help of a magical powerful Princess.

"lol EVERY girl wants to be a princess!!"

Seems more like an opinion. Twilight Sparkle didn't become a princess because she was a girl.

Here's another one: When a toy promotion changes a character's physical appearance, fire shall rain as the sky becomes darker than the blackest void!

:iconmrpopoplz: (takes notice of what I said)

Are you planing to extend this after Season 4?

I read fanfiction and I seem to create an incredible crossover between the magic of My Little Pony and the world of Skylanders. Please check out my gallery when you get the chance. But find the chapter, 'The Oracle and Arkus' That's where somepony made her first appearance, but only temporary.

Until what happen in season 4, it's comes next time. If Twilight Sparkle stays herself as a princess alicorn forever, then people would think my little pony friendship is magic will be cancelled.

This makes me glad I haven't seen Season 3. I stopped watching new episodes three quarters of the way through Season 2.

Oh, and with regards to jumping the shark, I think you're late. I consider Lesson Zero to be the shark jumping episode.

Damn we saw different things.
Personally, I saw:
-your friends may want to do different things and it's okay to not spend time with all of them at once, pace yourself
-If you're being bullied, try looking a little deeper into it before getting revenge on your bully, as that's not the way to deal with it
-It's better to face your fears
-Don't try to go overboard in things
-Normal friendship lesson, coupled with 'sometimes the person like that needs a chance for friendship'
-Same as Apple Family Reunion
-Eh, I'll admit a filler episode
-Plot device that people should stop complaining about until they see where it's going

Well, the third chart seems quite... off, especially when compared to the first two. Also...

:iconobjection4plz::iconobjection5plz::iconobjection6plz:The last lesson on the third chart completely contradicts the first lesson of the first chart! If there is no wrong way to be a girl, then that means not every girl wants to be a princess, unless not having that desire is wrong, which would mean no wrong way! And due to the fact the third chart seems extremely sarcastic... *Dramatic closeup* It seems the first chart would most likely be the one telling the truth!

You clearly didn't watch the season 3 finale carefully enough. Celestia gave a fully reasonable explanation why Twilight became an Alicorn.
The-Naval-Brony Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2013  Student Writer
I'm pretty sure its going to end. Bronies who think it will go on for 8 seasons are perfectly wrong. What I'm guessing is that the show will end on Season 4.

me too, it pains me to other artists don't want to honor the loss of the Unicorn, instead they do that Disgusting Alicorn.

Hasbro screwed up Season 3 in order to make more money for themselves rather than care for what the fans feel..
FlyingBrickAnimation Featured By Owner Mar 10, 2013   General Artist
The problem with Season 3 is that it seems to have only been created so they could make as many new MLP dolls as possible. (Which explains everything: the constant wardrobe changes of the mane6, Spitfire's redesign, Trixie and Discord reappearing and turning good, more new characters, and Twilight jumping the shark at the end by turning into an alicorn princess).

Just to make sure Hasbro comes through, I'd recommend joining the following group:

The only bad thing about season 3 is that it only had half as many episodes as the first 2 series. But hopefully season 4 will go back to having 26.

Kind of hard to take seriously when you cosplayed two princesses ^^;
Anyway, the chart feels off balanced due to favoritism by opinion.
jen--joy Featured By Owner Feb 16, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
And I CHOSE to dress up like princess character of my own free will, and I still respect girls who choose to express themselves differently. Media like Hasbro are taking away the element of choice and telling girls it's their only option. The problem is not people choosing to act like or dress like princess characters. The problem is when media outlets that people look up to provide princesses as the only option for girls to aspire to. MLP doing this betrays the very first point I brought up about Season 1: there's no wrong way to be a girl. To teach that to people and then have the series contradict itself by enforcing the "the heroine must always be a princess!" stereotype.

You tried, but you've mistaken my cosplay choices for my political beliefs. And last time I checked, I don't run around in Sailor Mars or Luna every day of my life. A costume is not clothing, and clothing in turn is not definitive of identity.

Also, you might wanna read the part where it said "What I learned", as in, I'm writing down what I've taken away from the series and it's messages and using that to criticize the problems with season 3.

I grew up from 80s through the 90s, so I am well aware of companies holding onto the demographic statistic ("Boy toy-show; Girl toy-show") mentality that older companies continue to have. What bothers me with other adult fans of FiM (or kids show in general) is their hypocrisy towards Twilight holding the Princess title and having an attitude about it when Celestia and Luna are also princesses. Though they should obviously be Queens, it is the Princess theme that's the most popular, be it because of youth or the excuse that its Disney's fault (which I find to be a silly excuse). And despite Hasbro (or whomever made the decision) the writers did have Celestia explain why a pony is given the title of a princess, it wasn't just wings or completing a spell.

You tried, but you've mistaken my cosplay choices for my political beliefs.
I tried what? My comment simply presents that your gallery along with the upload is a cause for confusion when there is no explanation. When I try to understand someone I view their background, it is a habit of mine. If it took my comment to bring this to light, then thank you for replying and detailing about it.
It clears things up.

A costume is not clothing, and clothing in turn is not definitive of identity.
Well that is obvious, but you found something you enjoyed about the characters (or attire) enough to at least portray them. The title of 'princess' did not deter your view of them.

"What I learned", as in, I'm writing down what I've taken away from the series
Sorry, I still see favoritism despite the disclaimer. There are people who have done a similar review of Season 2 in comparison to Season 1 because the 'letter to the princess' routine was not the ending focus. I am not demanding a fair view, it would have been nice to see you list the 'pro and con' lessons of each season since it seems you have a lot to state.

With how blunt some people are being and how 'rant' filled their postings are, I get the feeling that they want to sum up seasons as "Eww, girly stuff". Though on any given day I can end up agreeing with both types of tumblr essay's on the positive and negative of femininity in the media.
There is more to this but that would result in a long continuous comment tree and I didn't come here to argue or disagree with you by mentally blocking your opinion.
jen--joy Featured By Owner Feb 17, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
You "tried" making some kind of counter-point by claiming that I couldn't be taken seriously based on how I dress sometimes. :/ I criticized the show's conformity to a media stereotype and apparently I can't be taken seriously because of choices I make with my own hobby? Honestly, that sounds a wee bit sexist if not just nonsensical.

Without sounding needlessly rude, it's not my job to care about your feelings or what you "see". It's not my problem if you can't read the "disclaimer" properly. If you're so uncomfortable with people who don't make the same choices as you and see the same things as you, find someone's crap to comment on.
Decembirth Featured By Owner Feb 17, 2013
Okay, the mix up here is that you believe I am upset with you and your choices on a personal level. It is isn't you as a person, it is the upload(s) that I am referring to. I'm not uncomfortable, irritated, or upset (nor trolling). However, if that is your approach when commenting then it is fine, as stated I am not here to argue or force another person to change their ways.

I'm the type that likes to see balance when there are visual examples. It is how function mentally and what I am use to. Since this is the internet, I would expect to find a lot of views/opinions on one subject, because I find it interesting and do intentionally look for it so I don't end up stagnant about it.

Anyway, have a nice week.

Ah yes. I remember Babs Seed. She literally had NO reason to act like a douchebag to the CMC. Maybe it's the whole, relay pain to others, but it was still 4 to 2....

I can't find the ignore culture episode reference however. Which episode is that?

I also felt that they could have done a nice to be continued when she was zapped. And at least expand, and explain some more on the whole transformation.

They all could be better friends to each other actually, it's an ongoing problem I noticed.
jen--joy Featured By Owner Feb 16, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I hate how they managed the issue of Babs Seed because that is NOT how bullying is handled in the real world nor should it be. I was bullied as a kid and whether or not the people who picked on me were also victims themselves was of no consequence to me. If you bully someone, you deserve punishment and you should be corrected. I know it's a harsher message than what MLP can get away with teaching, but it's what is going to stop the epidemic of youth bullying and harassment.

The thing about ignoring culture is a reference to 'Spike at Your Service', where Applejack basically says that she knows the dragon code of honour is important to him but that they should handle some issues her way. Which... I get what they were saying, the point is that Spike's need to do things his way made people's lives harder, but it also sounded a bit like she wanted to ignore his culture. (It's also not the first time that Spike has had the issue of stunting his growth or his culture in order to be better socialized to pony society... check out Secret of my Excess.)

(Yes I realize I'm doing social analysis of a kid's cartoon as an adult. I overthink things all the time, what can ya do.)
mequez18 Featured By Owner Feb 17, 2013
Ah yes, come to think of it, everybody seems to get a slap on the wrist in this show when it comes to wrecking havoc, or wrongdoing, love and tolerate I guess.

Oh yes that whole episode was a missed opportunity to me. I do wonder how they make him a credit to the dragon race in season 2, and then know all about this dragon code thing in season 3.

I was wondering how Spike is all eloquent, and graceful beforehand, but sucks big time when in this episode. I guess you can say he let his excitement get the best of him, like how Applejack let fatigue mess with her cooking abilities. Talk about canon issues,

Yes I thought Applejack handle the dragon code thing poorly, she could have just said that friends do stuff like that all the time, and of course Spike is incredibly honorable. I guess that goes with the gang seeing him more of a pony than dragon anyways. Sure that's a good thing considering they all look past his Dragon greed powers, but that does leave identity issues. They really need to give us more detail on dragons for season 4.
